Before you go

Preparing for Winter Spiti

Altitude and fitness

This is a challenging winter trip. The route gains altitude from around 3,800 m to 5,000 m, and the gradual approach via Shimla, Kinnaur and Tabo gives your body time to adjust before Kaza. Expect off-road stretches with slippery, narrow and unpaved roads, and a 10 to 15 minute walk to some homestays. Speak to your doctor before travelling if you have heart, lung or blood pressure conditions.

Stays in winter

Pipes freeze in winter, so only common washrooms are available. Electricity and water are limited in Spiti and sometimes in Kinnaur, and luggage help may not be available, so pack light. Heater charges at hotels are extra. Solo travellers pay for single occupancy if they cannot be paired in a double or triple room.

Permits and who can book

Required permits are included. Carry a valid government photo ID. Rates differ for foreign tourists, so contact us first. Spiti packages and group departures are not available to citizens of Bangladesh, Pakistan or China. Group departures need at least 3 travellers.

ID proof, 2 to 3 thermals, 1 to 2 jackets, woollen cap, 2 pairs of gloves, 4 to 5 pairs of socks, trekking or sports shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip guard and cold cream, torch, power bank, multiplug, water bottle, and dry fruits or snacks. Carry a basic medicine kit with paracetamol, motion sickness tablets, antacids, antiseptic cream and bandages.

  • Accommodation on double/triple sharing basis in hotels and homestays

We planned our Himachal trip with Insta Himachal and the overall experience was really nice. The itinerary was not too rushed, which gave us enough time to actually enjoy the places instead of just covering spots. Hotels and travel arrangements were good and the team stayed connected throughout the trip. Really enjoyed the experience.
