Day hike
Dhankar village to lake and return | Start after breakfast, climb slowly with frequent breathing pauses, spend a short quiet period at the lake, carry every item of waste back and descend to visit the monastery if open.
A short but steep high-altitude hike from historic Dhankar village to a quiet lake above the Spiti–Pin river confluence.
Dhankar Lake is close enough for a half-day outing but high enough to demand respect. Dhankar village and monastery sit around 3,370 metres, and the lake is reached by a steep, exposed path above the settlement. Visitors arriving directly from the plains should not use this hike as their first activity in Spiti. Loose soil, strong sun, wind and scarce water are the main challenges. Pairing the walk with a respectful monastery visit creates a richer day than treating the lake as a photo stop.
Begin in Dhankar village after confirming the path locally. Climb the zigzag trail above the settlement to the lake, pause away from the water’s edge and descend by the same route. Walking time varies with acclimatisation and should never be rushed; carry all water from the village.
June to October is normally the practical period when the Spiti roads are accessible. Summer sun is intense even when the air feels cool, and afternoon wind can be strong. Early or late snow may close the path. Start in the morning after at least one or two acclimatisation nights in Spiti.

Dhankar Lake Trek uses the camps, village rooms or simple mountain accommodation appropriate to its 1 Day route. The final plan must name each halt and meal arrangement because facilities can change by season.
The transfer plan for Dhankar Lake Trek must state how the group reaches Dhankar Village and where it finishes. Snow, road damage or local controls can move the practical pickup point.
The trail is short but steep, loose and above 4,000 metres, so altitude makes it moderate.
It is better to acclimatise first, especially after arriving quickly from a lower elevation.
Do not rely on it. Carry sufficient water from Dhankar and avoid contaminating the lake.
Only if current local rules explicitly allow it; a day visit has less environmental impact.
Dress modestly, ask before photographing interiors and follow the resident community’s instructions.

A high-altitude traverse from Kunzum Pass towards the Moon Lake, trading the Batal road approach for a quieter walk across open Spiti terrain.

A very high non-technical trekking peak above Kibber, offering a vast Spiti panorama but demanding excellent acclimatisation, fitness and stable weather.

A quieter Kinnaur trek from Yulla Khas to a high-altitude lake and temple landscape, crossing forest and grazing ground above the Sutlej valley.
